PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has enacted a law on the weight of school bags for children, under which nursery school children weigh 1.5 kg, first class 2.4 kg, second to fifth class 5.3 kg, sixth to tenth class 5.4. School bags for first graders weigh 2.4 kg and school bags for second to fifth graders weigh 5.3 kg.
Similarly, school bags for children from sixth to tenth class will weigh 5.4 kg to 6.5 kg. For 11th and 12th grade students, it is recommended to keep the weight of the school bag at 7 kg. It has been informed that the School Baggage Act will be the first law in the history of Pakistan. The draft law also proposes a fine against educational institutions violating it, under which violating private educational institutions will be fined Rs 2 lakh. Action will also be taken against government officials for not stopping the violation. It may be recalled that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has made the curriculum of private educational institutions and popular subjects and notebooks so heavy that it is difficult to carry children.
